Madeline Schoonover is a feminist artist living and working in Chicago, IL, and is currently pursuing a BFA in Art, Media, & Design (studio drawing/painting concentration at DePaul University. She uses a variety of layered media (primarily oil paint and drawing materials) to create her nuanced pieces--usually rich in color, texture and symbolism. Her work deals with femininity, gender archetypes, and sexuality. Although her work does not adhere to a singular style, she has been greatly influenced by the works of Philip Guston, Henri Matisse and Alice Neel. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Schoonover’s upbringing in the North Star State has helped form her outsider’s perspective on the sociopolitical climate in Chicago, making her work within the contemporary Chicago art scene a welcomed tangent.
